The pretext to the Battle

This incident takes place in Saragarhi, a small border village in Pakistan, an Indian Area till 1947. In 1984 British Army had created 36th Sikhs regiment, and sent 5 companies to Samana Hills, Kurag, Sangar, Sahtop Dhar and Saragarhi in North Western Province. Saragarhi is a heliographic communication post between Lockhart and Gulistan Forts originally built Sikh Ruler Ranjit Singh. The Battle started on 12 Sep 1897, when the 10000 Afghan Pashtun reached Saragarhi.

• Around 09:00 AM on 12th September 1987,10,000 – 14,000 Afghans attack the post at Saragarhi. Sepoy Gurmukh Singh signals this to Colonel Haughtonbased at Fort Lockhart. But the colonel informs that he can’t provide help so quickly.
• With such a big army, Afghans could breach all the forts in the area one by one.
• The 21 Sikh soldiers decide to fight to the last minute of their lives to delay the afghans from reaching the forts.a
• The Afghans breach the walls and a fierce battle happens. Many Afghans and most of the Sikh Soldiers are killed in this first phase of the battle.
• Havildar Ishar Singh (Akshay Kumar) orders his remaining men to fall back into inner Walls. He remains there to fight alone with the Afghan tribesmen.
• then, Havildar Ishar Singh is killed in the fight. Also, The inner walls are breached by Afghans. then, all the Sikh soldiers except sepoy Gurmukh Singh are killed.
• Gurmukh Singh fights alone till his last breadth killing more than 20 Afghans. Afghans set fire to kill Gurmukh Singh. While dying he keeps yelling the Sikh battle cry “Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal!”
